Long post from Pebble recapping the full details of her Dad's lucky rescue:
My Dads home I got some of the details wrong when I told you all what happened the before night the cyclone hit he was up the moutain in a flimsy wooden canin with a tin roof. That night it was very winding (over 120mph gusts) and noisy as the roof kept on lifting up and the door banging (there is no way to shut the door). the next day (the day the cyclone hit) they were told to leave the mountain and go into Muscat itself. But dad was uncertain if this was the thing to do as the cyclone was heading towards muscat. but dad was told that as they have to cross three waddies (dry river beds) these often flood and wash out the road. this makes it inpassable for often a month. helicopters can just about manage to drop off emergancy food parcells but as they are up so high they can't carry passengers. They where told the road was ok and still passable so they (6 people) left in two landrovers. well they crossed the waddies ok. the last one had flooded but was still passable in a lanrover. then it was dual carriageway the rest of the way. they where about 10 mins drive from muscat itself when they hit a bit of surface water then the road colasped under them. the over Landrover was behind them and avoided this. Dads landrover drifted for a short way into a "ragging torrent" before they run aground onto a flatbed lorry that was at 45 degrees. the Cab was being supported by a tree One of its branches had puntuced the cabs windscreen and trapped the driver. Dads once Dads landrover had come to a stop the water was up to the front seats (landrover now stuck at 45 degrees) so they climb out the windows onto the Cab and try to rescue the driver who is frantically waving at them as the water covered him. (they could not get any doors open and where unable to save him). they then climbed onto the roof of the landrover with there legs in the sunroof and backs against the current and hanging on for dear life. one guy Terry was standing with his back to the lorry Cab. (I will tell you more about Terry latter) the over carriage way was still fine and about 40 foot away. the over landrover made it safely to Muscat. however people where stopping and taking pictures from their mobiles. eventually the police arrived with a younge lad who tyed a rope arround his waist and jumped in (noone hung onto the other end of the rope). Dad was yelling and waving at them to stop the water had reached the top of the roof where he was but was beginning to go down. (he thought they would be able to walk out in several hours  ) well the lad made it back to shore ok. A merc floated sinking by with people inside who where clawing at the windows trying to get out. evetually the Army arrived and through two ropes across and they made it back to shore. where they where first taken to the police station then dumped at an army barracks. The next nights dad spent in a hotel that was charging by the hour! What happened and Dad learnt afterward. Cyclone Guno was a catorgy 5 and was the worst to hit Oman since 1977. Oman was ready and prepared good sea defences and had its dissaster relief ready to go in what should have been a safe possition well inland. The main destruction was caused as a Dam busrt washing away 90 % of Omans dissater releif vehicals food equipment and some of there personal. the flash flood then traveled into muscat and was caught the wrong side of the sea defences this washed into the area where a lot of people working for my Dads company lived. Terry lived in the lowest part (deep bit) they are all bungerlows. Terry's wife lived there his daughter and two grandsons where visiting at the time. from what they where told afterward the water came into the home and started seeping under the doors "it never gets higher than a foot" so they put down towels to slow it and give soe protection. they had just put down the towels when the dam water reached them and trapped them inside the house. In the end they climbed and spent the night on top of the kitchen wall cupboards. Only Terry's daughter and oldest grandchild survived he was 4 the other child was 19 months. This really puts things into persective. And makes me realise how lucky I am. Dad says Muscat looks like New Orleans did, but most of there dissaster recovery plans have been swept away. they real shameful thing in this is that there has been very little coverage on this dissaster, so people do not know how bad it is or how much they need help and the G8 summit has taken all they news. I can't even find a site to donate to.
Have you emailed news websites to ask them why this not getting coverage? Might be worth saying you think this requires more coverage. It has been said before but needs saying again - your dad was very lucky and I am glad he is okay. But if you see people with tattoos of x's (particularly on the hands) or razorblades, that's what that's all about.
Not sure I can reconcile the tattoos and razorblades with the abstinance of poisonous and unhealthy substances, the two don't match up in my mind. Now I'm all depressed. :(

Cool, you can be in my crew! That's another thing about it, we have crews.

Awesome! What do the crews do?

I'd say that pretty much describes my life these past 7 years. I'd join your crew, but I plan on giving up all of it and getting drunk, maybe smokin a little weed and having wild sex. :D Can't wait for the cons

Crews go to shows together basically, they have kind of a rough reputation but it's mostly unfounded. I've been straightedge almost 10 years, including the year I turned 21 :pirate: The point is not conforming to social standards by putting poisons into your body. A lot of people take it a step further and are vegan or abstain from caffiene and refined sugar as well. I guess most straightedge kids would answer what's the point of being straightedge with what's the point of drinking?

If I'm going to be in your crew, do I have to get a tatoo? :uhoh: No way I'm going vegan! I need my meat damnit!

I'm not vegan either, I used to be vegetarian until I spent a lot of time with a vegan and decided they are too annoying. And no, you don't need a tattoo to join the crew, Mr. Fury doesn't have any edge tattoos, either.
I find this story very funny for some reason. HEADLINE: Confession time
yeah...there comes a point I think in a lot of people's lives where enough is enough and you just don't have a need to do a lot of the things that you did before of course, I've only sustained it while married for some reason :dunno:

That's true Lany though, to be completely honest, in my case I've never done any of those things at all. Never smoked, done drugs, gotten drunk. Like ever. Just never really wanted to. eta: You can tell I'll be a lot of fun at cons. :P

I didn't do any of those things at the last con either and still managed to have a good time.

Yeah, that stuff is not necessary for fun

after the no cyber confession and now this, people are going to know what a total square I am.

somehow if the other members of this board where to check out TTTNE's right now we would be doing serrious damage to our reputations. I'm all or nothing. Come from a family with an extreame history of alcoholism and I admit to having an addictive personality. I try to take it slow and easy, but once I start drink regularly, I go over the edge...and that is why I go such long periods without it. I would have to be sure that I wouldn't keep drinking after the con. and of course drinking leads to other things like permiscious sex.

I'm thinking the next thread needs an abstinance title that should really shock people

NO!!!!!!! come on...I only have cyber   and :smileysex: a thread of abstinance would kill me

well i was thinking we could bomb it after one page

 There you go.
I have never smoked or done any non legal drugs but I have been shit faced plenty of times. I haven't had anything to drink in about 5 months now but thats probably because I haven't been to a bar or hung out with friends too much lately. I haven't been really drunk in over a year. I see that alcohol does it for some people but I could never become addicted. It just doesn't do it for me. That just means that there is something else out there that I have managed to stay away from that would hook me. Everyone has a hook, just it's different for each person. Smoking has no appeal for me whatsoever.

the last time I drunk alcohol was new year! I may have had a glass of wine since but I doubt it. Never smoked, each time I got near anyone smoking or who stank of smoke I wanted to chuck up. Yes I am afraid so folks, shocking I know but thats the truth. Big up the straightedge crew! Also big up to the drinkers amongst us - I have no problem with anybody's personal choice in life. Do as you will and enjoy it :D
Kinda, I found an apartment and move in Friday. I got my electric settled but the Gas people are being dicks. I have to go in and show them Identification (hopefully Friday morning) to get it settled. The bad thing is there office in in downtown D.C so it's going to be a real bitch. So, yeah I pull out Wed morning and probably won't have net access again till Monday evening. Thats if the guy shows up when he is supposed to. I did find a good apartment though.
Congrats on the new apartment Jagged.
